Lainey Wilson stopped by The Bobby Bones Show today (March 31) to talk about what it’s like being on the road, her acting experience and the big on-screen kissing scene. Plus, she answers some uncomfortable questions from listeners, and we find out if a celebrity has ever slid into her DMs.
Wilson made her acting debut when she joined Season 5 of Yellowstone as a musician named Abby. She really enjoyed her time on the show and liked that it was a challenge for her and a way to step out of her comfort zone. After watching the season, she said there were a few things she wished she had done differently, because at first, she had no idea what she was doing. She found what worked for her the best was not memorizing her lines verbatim because she needed to have the scenes be more like a conversation. She compared her big kiss scene to “ripping the Band-Aid off,” and said that she had to lay the law down with the actor and told him it’s her first rodeo so don’t use tongue. She’s not opposed to doing more acting roles, but no matter what songwriting will always be her number one priority.
Wilson has had a huge year so far, and it’s only just beginning. Her song “Heart Like A Truck” is nearing the number one song in the country, her duet with HARDY “wait in the truck,” is in the top five and she’s currently on Luke Combs’ World Tour. She said it’s been a whirlwind and can’t believe she went from trying to get people to listen to her only a few years ago to now being one of country’s biggest stars.
August 1st will mark 12-years in Nashville for Wilson. When she first got to town, she lived in a camper trailer outside a recording studio and would play gigs trying to make it. She said she feels like she’s been here forever, but also like she just got here yesterday. It’s been a crazy journey to get where she is right now, but she wouldn’t change any of it. She knows it sounds crazy, but she could always imagine this success for herself. She knew she wanted to be part of the community and that country music and song writing was always going to be part of her life. When asked if she listens to her own music, she said yes and that she has to, especially when she gets the tracks back, she’ll listen over and over again to make sure it sounds right. She said, “If you ain’t a fan of yourself, no one will be.”
Her current single, “Heart Like A Truck” has become a huge hit, but at first, she didn’t know if it would be a single. After writing and recording it, all she knew was that she loved it and wanted it to be part of her record because she had a good feeling about it. She wrote the song during the pandemic and said it served a purpose during that time for her. It became an anthem for when things still seemed so unsure, and she didn’t know if concerts would ever come back. When she started to feel down, she’d listen to the demo, and it’d inspire her to keep her head up during hard times.
Wilson also has another hit song on her hands right now. Her duet with HARDY “wait in the truck” is currently in the Top Ten and helped her make history! She is the first female country artist in over a decade to simultaneously have two songs in the Top 10. When HARDY sent her the song, she knew she had to be a part of it even if the radio never played it because she wanted to be able to help someone feel less alone with the lyrics. She didn’t realize it would be a single until she already agreed to be on it, she was just hoping the song would speak to whoever needed to hear its message.
Between her music and Yellowstone role, Wilson has become quite the household name, but also for her butt going viral on TikTok. She said some famous rappers slid into her DMs after they saw the videos about it. But if you think she started the campaign about her butt as a PR tactic, you’re absolutely wrong. She said it was weird, but whatever brings the people in. If they found her music through her butt, then cheers. Her favorite comments were from people saying they found her because of her butt but stuck around because of the music.
Wilson is currently on Combs World Tour and will also be doing shows this summer with Eric Church, before going on HARDY’s Mockingbird & THE CROW Fall Tour.
