Carrie Underwood wiped tears from her eyes as she watched an American Idol hopefulâs audition with an emotional original ballad.
Slater Nalley, 17, a high school student from Atlanta, Georgia, captivated the panel of celebrity judges â which also includes Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan â with his rendition of âTraces Of You.â Nalleyâs English teacher, Mrs. Davis, introduced him and shared the story behind the song.
âHe wrote a song for my son that was killed 8 years ago,â Davis said. A tribute to Carter Davis (1999-2016) appeared on screen. âSlater had heard the story about my son, and I had written a poem. And the second year that I taught him, I asked, you know, âwould you mind looking at the poem? Iâd love to see, you know, what your thoughts are and how you turn a poem into a song.â So he did. And two weeks later, he wrote the song, and thatâs what heâs gonna sing today.â
Nalley said heâs âglad (the song has) helped so much. He said the song in Carterâs honor is âthe most deep thing Iâve ever written about.â Nalley shared on American Idol that he and Carter never met; however, he felt a âpresence come into my lifeâ when Davis shared the story. Nalley got emotional as he spoke about writing âTraces Of Youâ in Carterâs memory.
âFor Slater to not have known Carter and to write this song is just â it captured Carter. It captured âoh, thereâs that person I wish was still in my life.â (It captured) our faith that carries us, and it felt like there was light and hope in the middle of it, too,â Davis said as photos of the English teacher and her late son filled the screen.
Nalley said heâs âhappy toâŚput a little joy in a dark place.â He began to play his guitar and perform âTraces Of You.â Throughout Nalleyâs audition, the judges leaned in and listened intently. Underwood dabbed tears rolling down her face. When the song ended, Bryan reached an arm out to his fellow Idol judge and asked, âyou OK over there?â Underwood replied, âIâm not! Iâm not OK.â
âEven though this was about your son,â Underwood acknowledged Davis, before turning to Nalley âevery single person that hears that can fill in that memory with somebody thatâs in themselves. And I couldnât have imagined you doing that any better.â
Richie and Bryan continued the praises, including when the Mind Of A Country Boy star advised the Georgia student to continue taking the stage âand singing with your heart, and the rest will take care of itself.â
âSometimes we donât have to vote,â Richie said. He, Underwood and Bryan unanimously told Nalley heâs going to Hollywood.
