Tiffin City Council President Dies

TIFFIN, Ohio - The president of Tiffin's city council and current acting mayor has passed away.

WTOL 11 reports Councilman Mark Hayes passed away at his home overnight and was discovered by his wife Tuesday morning. Hayes had served on council since 1999 and had been council president since September 2017. He was serving as active mayor while Mayor Aaron Montiz is in Japan with an Ohio trade delegation.

Hayes was employed by North Central Ohio Educational Service Center, working with students with disabilities at the Old Fort Elementary Bettsville Campus. He was also active in the community, coaching volleyball and softball at Calvert High School.

“I am devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Mark Hayes. I had the pleasure of working with Mark my entire tenure on council, and he has played a significant role since I was elected as Mayor. I will sorely miss his knowledge, humor, friendship and sage advice,” Mayor Montz said in a statement.

He is survived by his wife Patty and children, Thomas and Mary Kate.
